Lavoro, the first agricultural inputs distributor in Latin America to have its shares listed on the Nasdaq, the American stock exchange, through a partnership with Pattern Ag, a US company and leader in soil metagenomic analysis and digital agronomy, announced in October 2022, offers farmers in Brazil an innovative service for predicting crop risks and nutritional deficiencies in cultures, as well as specific product recommendations, through a personalized software experience.
“We strive to offer a complete portfolio of technological solutions for farmers. Soil analysis is not new to the market, but the difference in the service we offer is that we not only provide chemical analysis, but also biological and metagenomic evaluation. We are part of the entire process, from collection to delivery of the analysis and assisted recommendation, carried out on site by our experts,” says Gustavo Modenesi, Head of B2B and Services at Lavoro.
The distributor has already carried out a pilot project for the service with 125 farmers in the states of Mato Grosso do Sul, Goiás, São Paulo and Minas Gerais, treating around 35 thousand hectares in these regions. “Through the collection of a soil sample by Lavoro, the company is able to analyze the chemical and biological aspects of the soil, as well as collect genetic material, which is sent for analysis in the United States. From this detailed analysis, we are able to show the farmer the possible risks of pathogens that he may have during the production cycle, as well as foliar diseases and the intensity of the risks, and of course, any deficiencies in chemical elements or nutrients,” emphasizes Guilherme Rosa, Lavoro’s Corporate Marketing, Services and New Business Manager.
Based on this analysis, the producer can “predict” possible bottlenecks during the production cycle, which will help them make better decisions about their crops. As is the case with the participants in the pilot project.
“Once the analysis has been carried out, the report presented gives a complete overview of soil fertility, crop protection and foliar analysis, as well as a complete study of the macro and micro characteristics of the soil, analyzing it point by point, predicting any possible problems. If the farmer is under pressure from nematodes, for example, we’ll give them a recommendation on what to use to alleviate the problem,” says Rosa.
Samples are taken every five hectares, which allows for accuracy in the final reports, increasing the farmer’s decision-making power based on the advice provided. The aim, still in this cycle, is to carry out around 150 thousand hectares of predictive agriculture throughout Brazil.
“Preventive agriculture is undoubtedly one of the major technological trends in the sector. There’s still a long way to go, but our goal is to democratize access to these tools, and ensure that farmers can achieve greater productivity without headaches, and with as much cost reduction as possible,” concludes Gustavo Modenesi.
